The flashlight is a portable device used to illuminate an area of low visibility area due to the absence of light. Generally the device contains batteries, a power switch, a light bulb with reflective surface, and a case to hold it all.

The LED Flashlight works with light-emitting diodes. Generally they are more power efficient, and provide longer battery life. The classic Incandescent Flashlight works with gas filled lightbulbs and a reflector. When battery life begins to fade so does the intensity of the light. The High Intensity Discharge Flashlight is a more complicated version, it operates through the use of ionized gas and electricity. Generally HID Flashlights tends to be brighter than the traditional variety and tend to cover a wider field.

The first flashlight was made by Joshua Lionel Cowen in 1896. The name flashlight was derived from it's use in it's primitive form when the device had a short life span.
